1) I hit 30k in Deadshifted. I’m not completely blazing with the word count, but that’s OK. This is some of the best writing I’ve ever done. I knew I was feeling it — and hitting 30k meant I could finally send it to Daniel, and he agrees. Not all of it is amazing, of course, but the amazing parts are quite so ;). Seriously, i feel like I’m leveling up in this book — I’m focusing in on characterization in a way I never have before. It’s a really good feeling to know that not only is the book getting somewhere, but that I’m becoming a better writer along the way. Plus — it’s a third of a book done. That’s a good milestone to celebrate :D.

2) I’m floating to another unit I really like at work tonight. (I’m actually on break, right now.) I love that feeling where other nurses who don’t know you yet hover a bit, and then you prove your competence, and then voila, everything’s hands off and it’s all OK. Heh.

Years and years ago when I was at this same unit, I had a patient who I hadn’t seen all of quite yet, who was thrashing around in bed, and suddenly their thigh was exposed, and ZOMG….I flipped out because I could see a tangle of red lines going up and down, that I hadn’t heard about in report. I was cursing myself, “How could I have missed this!” and “Dear God, what do they have!” and I rushed into the room only to find out that they’d had a Man-O-War tattooed on their leg, and what I was seeing were tattooed tentacles dangling down. False alarm, completely. Quite a lovely tattoo though.

3) I ran for a mile and a half this morning. I’m trying to take better care of my health (mostly for emotional reasons, although yay increased muscle-mass and lung capacity) and on my work days, I can’t seem to fit anything else in in the evenings — but I can talk myself into hitting the gym right before I go home in the mornings to bed. I did it a couple times last week, but I didn’t want to talk about it in case I didn’t keep it up. To be honest, I was flat out amazed the first time I ran a mile and didn’t want to die afterwards. It’s pretty awesome though, ’cause then I don’t have to feel like such a bone-crushed slug when I work long stretches. When I get up after sleeping in all day I feel so wrecked sometimes it’s hard to move. Running help gets the “you’re lazy!” monkey off my back.

So that’s that. I’m on for two more nights after this, and then a long stretch off. 40k of Deadshifted feels very within reach, I hope to hit it by this upcoming Friday or so.
